Quick Guide: Spain

Spain did not disappoint! Such a diversity in mountains, rock formations and colors. Including breathtaking lakes, waterfalls and oceanviews.

What we think you NEED to know

  • Rent a car if you want to explore more and freely. It is fairly cheap, the roads are in fine shape, driving is easy, although some places and roads are a bit narrow. So, go for the smaller car.

  • Within the last years Spain has become more expensive. Therefore, choosing accommodation with a kitchen, to cook yourself, can be a good way to save money. There’s many fine apartments!

  • The weather is in general mild and somewhat warm all year-round. We visited in December and had around 20°C/68°F almost every day for a week, some days even warmer. No rain, low wind.

Our key moments

  • Hiking around in the coolest landscape in Paisatge Protegit de la Serra del Maigmó in Serra del Sit. Climbing several summits, some more challenging than others.

  • Wandering around in Parque Natural de la Serra Gelada being able to take the cutest photos of squirrels close up!

  • Visiting the fun, colorful, and cozy little town called Villajoyosa. Perfect place to grab a cold beverage and some Spanish cuisine.

  • Coming “home” to our rented apartment after all the hiking, eating homemade burgers while watching handball in the TV.

The taste of Spain:

Spanish wine is at the top of our list. If you are into wine in any way, trying some or even going on a wine-tour is a great idea.

Spanish tapas would be an excellent choice with some wine. Or any other occasion for that matter.

Food-wise the country is known for different things. Spanish paella is known for being the national dish, nice if liking seafood.

And of course churros. A delicious desert or snack!

This will be NICE to know

  • We found a cheap apartment to rent in the city Calpe. It is a really nice town, with beautiful beaches in the front and mountains out back. An awesome way to see all this and the city is to hike the Penyal d’Ifac Natural Park (332 m/1090 ft in elevation).

  • Going in the Winter months has it con’s of course. Sunbathing on the beach and swimming in the ocean is not really a thing this time a year. But experiencing Christmas time in Spain is very enjoyable. And there is a lot less tourists compared to Spring or Summer time.

  • At least outside of the big cities, there is this contagious chilled vibe. Nobody is stressing around, people are smiling, and just enjoying life.

Our favorite locations

  • The top two hiking spots: Paisatge Protegit de la Serra del Maigmó in Serra del Sit near Alicante, and Órganos de Benitandús near Valencia.

  • Fonts de l’Algar. These waterfalls are stunning and the area really nice. Especially if you have it all to yourself like we did.

  • Parque Natural de la Serra Gelada offers both absolutely amazing views over the ocean, but the many cute squirrels is a big reason too!

This Quick Guide is just a glimpse of Spain. There is a lot more areas and cities to explore: Madrid, Ibiza, Barcelona, Málaga, Bilbao, Mallorca etc. We’d love to do and see more, wouldn’t you?
