We chased the mountain, got incredibly lucky, and discovered some amazing wildlife along the way. 🏔️🌅 When we went to bed in Mount Taranaki National Park, everything was covered in snow and the mountain was completely hidden by clouds. But the next morning, we finally start seeing glimpses of Taranaki and rush to the Pouākai Circuit trailhead before the clouds disappear again. The 13 km return hike to the Pouākai Tarns is absolutely worth it. The wind is too strong for the famous reflection we were hoping for, but we spend some time photographing the mountain and simply taking it all in. After some proper vanlife essentials in New Plymouth — showers, a spa and charging Hygge while our towels dry in the sun at the parking lot — we head back up the mountain for sunset driving by so many cherry trees in full cherry blossom making it the perfect picture frame. More clouds awaits at the sunset unfortunately. So we try again the next morning. A 5 AM alarm later, we're racing to the viewing platform as the clouds finally clear. We both end up completely speechless and ridiculously excited. One of those moments we'll remember for a long time. From Taranaki, we continue towards Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre, which completely exceeds our expectations. We see tūī, watch longfin eels being fed, spot kiwis and have some incredible encounters with curious northern kākā. The next few days are spent hiding from heavy rain and wind in Eketāhuna, catching up on social media and enjoying a slower few days in Hygge. Another week on the road, another mountain finally revealed — and some pretty amazing wildlife along the way. Wonder what the East Coast has in store for us next week? Mount Taranaki, Kiwis & Wild Kākā | Vanlife In New Zealand
We came for the popular geothermal landscapes known to New Zealand, changed our plans, and somehow ended up finding one of our favourite places so far. 🌋 We leave McLaren Falls Park and head towards Rotorua, where we make our first stop at Kuirau Park — a free geothermal park right in the middle of the city, with boiling pools, bubbling mud and colourful trees. Our original plan was to visit some of Rotorua's more famous geothermal attractions, including Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. But after seeing the entrance prices — more than NZ$100 per person for each — we decide they're outside our preferred budget. It's not only the price, though. After spending time exploring Iceland, we've already experienced some incredible geothermal landscapes, so we're conscious of choosing the experiences that genuinely excite us rather than simply ticking off the most famous attractions. So we keep driving. And, once again, Google Maps leads us somewhere we had never heard of: Ōrākei Kōrako Geothermal Park & Cave. As soon as we arrive, we know we've made the right decision. The staff are incredibly welcoming, we cross the lake to reach the geothermal area, and the landscape on the other side completely blows our minds! Then comes another unexpected surprise — we're offered the chance to camp in their parking area, with access to a restroom, Wi-Fi and outdoor facilities, all while enjoying an incredible view. Obviously, that's a very easy yes from us. The following day takes us to Huka Falls and the Aratiatia Rapids, where we watch the dam release and see that unreal blue Waikato River water. In between we take advantage of the small pauses without rain to take care of some DIY projects on our campervan Hygge. Who wouldn't want a DIY project taking place on a random parking lot? Haha. Before settling down for another night, we treat ourselves to a geothermal walk at Wairakei Terraces followed by some much-needed warmth in their thermal spa. With temperatures dropping below freezing at night, we're starting to feel the cold in Hygge! Then we head towards Tongariro National Park, hoping to make the most of the mountains. Unfortunately, the conditions mean the Tongariro Alpine Crossing isn't a good option, so we change plans and explore some shorter walks and waterfalls instead. We get glimpses of the volcanoes through the clouds, watch snow falling around us and eventually take the Forgotten World Highway towards Mount Taranaki. We end the day at a campsite completely covered in snow and the mountain nowhere to be seen. But next week… the weather finally clears up. Geothermal New Zealand, Blue Water & Snow-Covered Volcanoes | Vanlife In New Zealand
Some of our favourite places in New Zealand so far have been the ones we never planned to visit. 😮 We leave Piha and the Waitākere Ranges and make a quick stop at Hunua Falls before continuing south. The following day, we head back west and randomly discover the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House on Google Maps. Neither of us had heard of it before, but after finding out what it was, there was no question — we had to go. And we're so glad we did. We see our first kiwis in New Zealand before continuing to Marokopa Falls, which is easily the biggest waterfall we've seen so far. From there, CamperMate leads us to a freedom camping spot near the Mangapohue Natural Bridge. The bridge is already incredible during the day, but after dark we walk back out to it and discover hundreds of glowworms lighting up the darkness around us. It genuinely feels like we're standing underneath a sky full of stars. After a very rainy day spent working from a café in Ōtorohanga, the weather finally clears and we make a quick stop at Putāruru Blue Springs before — once again — randomly finding somewhere we hadn't planned on staying. We discover McLaren Falls and then McLaren Falls Park, where we spontaneously decide to stay for a few days. A quiet little park, beautiful waterfalls, sunshine and an unexpected offer from the local park ranger to open up a quieter campsite just for us. Needless to say, we didn't need much convincing. Haha. And of course, we have to go looking for glowworms again. This time, we find even more of them — right beside a waterfall. The following day takes us to Omanawa Falls, a beautiful place surrounded by native bush and with deep cultural significance to Māori. We take our time reading the information around the site and learning more about the history, culture and meaning connected to the area. Another few days of vanlife, another collection of places we never expected to find — and another reminder of just how much there is to discover in New Zealand. And next week… geothermal landscapes! Our First Kiwis, Giant Waterfalls & Glowworms | Vanlife In New Zealand
A birthday, rainforest, black sand beaches, waterfalls and a 5 AM penguin mission… this one had a bit of everything. 😂 This week, we take a little break from vanlife to celebrate Benjamin's 30th birthday in the beautiful Waitākere Ranges. The celebration includes a delicious homemade meal — made with some improvisation though — surprises, beautiful sunrise over the rainforest right outside our window and a good bit of spoiling. We then head out to really explore the Waitākere Ranges, starting at the incredible Arataki Visitor Centre before discovering Karekare Falls and Karekare Beach — our first black sand beach in New Zealand. From there, we continue to Piha, where we hike to the spectacular Kitekite Falls and explore another beautiful black sand beach. We finish the day at the Mercer Bay Loop Walk, timing our hike perfectly for sunset. The views over the enormous cliffs and the Tasman Sea are absolutely incredible, and we even get the drone up for some aerial footage. The next morning starts before 5 AM as we attempt to spot little blue penguins at Piha. Unfortunately, we don't have any luck — but a meat pie for breakfast, local surfers, birds and another beautiful morning at the beach make up for it. Our Birthday Getaway in New Zealand's Rainforest | Vanlife In New Zealand
We're slowly settling into vanlife and discovering just how much New Zealand has to offer. 🚐🇳🇿 In this vlog, we explore Tawharanui Regional Park on a beautiful spring day, wandering through what Ditte describes as a real-life fairytale. We enjoy the coastal scenery, spot heaps of native birds and learn about the possibility of seeing some of NZ's more rare wildlife. And just as we're leaving the park, Benjamin spots something completely unexpected — two takahē! A very special encounter with one of New Zealand's rarest birds. We then head to Leigh, where we enjoy the mild spring weather, a cold beer and watch Kākās flying around at sunset. The next day takes us to Omeru Reserve and its beautiful waterfalls before continuing across to the West Coast and the spectacular Muriwai Gannet Colony. Meanwhile, our campervan projects continue. We're still trying to solve our mysterious solar panel problem, but the amazing people at Burnsco help us test our setup and finally figure out what's going wrong. Back at Hygge, we start sewing our new curtains and take some time to thank all of you for your amazing comments, recommendations and messages. Eventually, the solar mystery is solved, we replace our faulty panel and get a good deal thanks to the kind people at Burnsco. With another van project ticked off the list, we head towards the Waitākere Ranges to celebrate Benjamin's 30th birthday! Exploring New Zealand's Wild Coast & Unexpected Wildlife | Vanlife In New Zealand
Vanlife in New Zealand officially begins! 🚐🇳🇿 After weeks of turning our old Toyota Hiace into a home, we finally finish the last renovations, pack everything up and leave Auckland for the first time. Our first stop is Gulf Harbour, where we quickly learn one of the most important lessons of vanlife: always check if you actually have gas for your stove. The next morning, we wake up to the most incredible ocean view right outside our back window. We explore Shakespear Regional Park, spot some beautiful New Zealand birds, discover Gully Waterfall and enjoy a beer at Pier Z — before Benjamin spots something incredible in the water: STINGRAYS! Over the next few days, we start settling into our new life. We go for morning walks, drink coffee with an ocean view, Ditte tries her first New Zealand meat pie and we finally give you a proper tour of **Hygge**, our new home on four wheels. We also share our rough plan for travelling around New Zealand, with the goal of exploring the North Island for around a month before eventually heading south. If you know somewhere we absolutely shouldn't miss, let us know! And of course, vanlife means more projects. After another trip to Bunnings, Benjamin installs our new electrical water pump — and it actually works! Meanwhile, our solar panel continues to cause us problems... We're still figuring everything out, but this is officially the beginning of our new life on the road. No fixed home. No strict itinerary. We Left Auckland & Started Vanlife in New Zealand! | Vanlife In New Zealand
It's finally ours — and now we can start building our home on four wheels. 🚐🇳🇿 After months of travelling, changing plans and trying to figure out what comes next, we finally have the home that will take us through our next year in New Zealand during our Working Holiday. In this vlog, Benjamin flies from Auckland to Gisborne to pick up our new campervan — and the excitement of finally seeing it in person and realizing that this is actually going to be our home is very real. The next day, the van transformation begins! We head to Kmart, IKEA and Bunnings to stock up on everything from kitchenware and pillows to building supplies and all the little things we need to turn this van into OUR home. Also making sure to get memories of the van exactly as we bought it before beginning to change and renovate it. Then the fun begins! We start by tearing the kitchen apart. Over the next couple of days, we pull things out, paint, drill, saw and slowly start turning the van into something that actually feels like ours. There's plenty of DIY chaos, music, laughter and even a very well-deserved McDonald's lunch break. Despite of continuous rain and us both feeling a little under the weather, probably due to experiencing Winter for the first time in 2026, we still manage to get a lot done. We finally made it to New Zealand. 🇳🇿 After months of travelling, hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and constantly changing our plans, we're starting a completely new chapter — and this time, we're hoping to build a life on the road in a campervan. We arrive in Auckland and settle into a beautiful little studio in Point Chevalier, with blue skies, sunshine and an incredible view over the water. As we begin exploring our new surroundings, we're introduced to some of New Zealand's incredibly colorful native birds and get our first taste of the country's unique culture. But starting a new life abroad isn't all beautiful views and exciting adventures. We're dealing with a few unexpected challenges, from getting scammed for more than $500 and struggling to set up a bank account, to being far away from family during a difficult time. For Ditte, it becomes the first real moment where the downsides of living abroad hit home. At the same time, we're already searching for our future home on wheels — and eventually make an offer on one. It's a week of beautiful moments, difficult moments, new experiences and a lot of uncertainty. But we're here. Week 6: After a night in Taupō, we headed towards Tongariro National Park, hoping to make the most of the mountains despite the not-so-great weather. 🏔️🇳🇿Unfortunately, the conditions meant the Tongariro Alpine Crossing wasn't a good option, so we changed plans and explored some shorter walks and waterfalls instead.Kinda a bummer, as we'd really been looking forward to that particular hike. Oh well, can't get it all. 🤷‍♂️We got glimpses of the volcanoes through the clouds, watched snow falling around us and eventually took the Forgotten World Highway towards Mount Taranaki.We ended the day at a campsite completely covered in snow — with the mountain nowhere to be seen. ❄️These were definitely some of the coldest days we've had so far. One night we slept in -7°C. A tad chilly, we admit. 🥶But the day after… the weather finally cleared up.And well, we think Mt. Taranaki deserves a post of its own. Week 6: We came looking for geothermal landscapes, changed our plans, and somehow ended up finding one of our favourite places so far. 🌋🇳🇿Our original plan was to visit some of Rotorua's more famous geothermal attractions, including Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. But after seeing the entrance prices — more than NZ$100 per person for each — we decided they were outside our preferred budget.So we kept driving.And, once again, Google Maps led us somewhere we hadn't heard of: Ōrākei Kōrako Geothermal Park & Cave.As soon as we arrived, we knew we'd found something pretty special.Then came another unexpected surprise — we were offered the chance to camp in their parking area, with access to a restroom, Wi-Fi and outdoor facilities, all while enjoying an incredible view. 🤯We still can't believe how much kindness we've experienced from people we've met around the world. 🤍The following day took us to Huka Falls and the Aratiatia Rapids, where we watched the dam release and saw that unreal blue Waikato River water.Very cool. We actually ended up freedom camping at the Aratiatia Rapids that night too.
