Working Holiday in NZ

The dream of driving around in our own campervan, picking yellow kiwis and discovering the cool land of New Zealand

Our very loose plan and some practical need-to-know

This is our most futuristic-project, just meaning the project that is the furthest away from now. Therefore, you guys will have to do with a small introduction into what it presumably will entail, and wait in high anticipation to learn and know more. What a cliff-hanger, huh?

The absolutely not so detailed plan so far is to fly to New Zealand just before our six months B2 Visa in the USA expires, and therefore begin this next project only a few weeks or days after we have hopefully finished thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Traveling to and living in New Zealand is after both WorkAway in Costa Rica and PCT & Thru-Hiking.

The important information and must do’s
Before embarking on any of the two mentioned projects, we will apply for our Working Holiday Visas in New Zealand while still living in Denmark (so sometime before December 31, 2025). The process of applying is actually really easy, but the “catch” is that you have to arrive in the country within 12 months of having had the Visa issued. We will probably leave the USA sometime late September or beginning of October, 2026. Therefore, to be on the safe side we’ll make our Visa Applications in late October this year.  

Oh, and another rather important detail, you cannot be older than 30 years of age to get and use this type of Visa. Therefore, no matter what happens in the meantime from now till we come closer, we must arrive in the country before Benjamin turns 31 years old (Benjamin is seven months older than Ditte). Yes, it is correctly understood that you just have to still be 30 years old or younger when entering the country to use the Working Holiday Visa in New Zealand.

It is different in different countries, we therefore encourage y’all to always do your own research, to be perfectly sure of your own process and possibilities. As you might have read at our About Us page, this is actually the same kind of Visa Benjamin had when working and living in Australia for eight months before we met.

Entering New Zealand and then what?
When having entered the country it is possible to stay for up to 12 months (it is actually possible for us to extend with further three more months making it 15 in total, if we meet specific requirements during the initial 12 months period). In short, on this Visa we will have the opportunity of working – just no more than three months at the same job – and at the same time discover all the amazing things New Zealand has to offer.

Loosely put, we aspire to work enough to save up to the project and adventure that comes next. We hope to work at different places, and would truthfully speaking be thrilled to be doing different kinds of hard/farm work. Like picking yellow kiwis. Preferably at places where we can connect more personally with some locals, make some friendships, and become a part of a community. It would be awesome. 

Of course we will still continue to be working online as digital nomads and keeping everything Chasing Endless Horizons entails updated. In all likelihood we’ll have plenty of time and opportunity to catch up with all the things that we couldn’t or didn’t get to fully do while living more primitively some of the time in the two previous projects. 

When the opportunity presents itself and the money fits, we’ll buy a campervan, to sell again when we leave the country and thereby making the cost as minimal as possible. In that way we can live on the road, easily explore more of the country and maybe ease more slowly back to living a more “normal” lifestyle after having been living in a tent and hiking for five months on the PCT. That probably will take some adjusting time. But at least living in a campervan will feel luxurious, and being able to drive around will probably seem effortless. Although we will without a doubt do a lot of hiking still. Would be a shame not to, wouldn’t it? For those of you who don’t know what we are talking about – check these two projects out.

What comes next still needs to be discovered

We can’t even comprehend what this project and New Zealand has in store for us. It is still so far away from now that it is completely surreal to think about and really relate to. And what comes next you ask, maybe something with sailing – could be a dream come true to be  some form of volunteer crew on a boat and do some Island-hopping in French Polynesia or Indonesia while learning more about the art of sailing and helping out in every way we can on board. Who knows? We don’t. Yet.
