The Big Decision: Why We’re Leaving Denmark for the PCT in 2026

Have you ever felt a deep connection to something — even before you’ve tried it? That’s how we feel about the PCT. Somehow, this trail already has a special value for us, even though we haven’t set foot on it yet. And here’s why.

Oh, but first, nice to meet ya — we are Ditte & Benjamin! A Danish couple with an insatiable lust for traveling, life, and the outdoors. Very soon, we’ll be embarking on the biggest adventure of our lives, Chasing Endless Horizons, which includes thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. As part of The Trek’s 2026 Blogger Team we’ve been given the honor of sharing our raw, real, and awesome moments before, during, and after the PCT with you guys. We sincerely hope you’ll want to tag along on this journey with us!

The moment that ignited something in us

Our first encounter with the PCT was on a regular October evening back in 2022. Sitting on the couch in our jogging clothes, all cozy with a glass of boxed wine. We quite randomly stumbled upon a PCT documentary on YouTube and within minutes of watching it, we were hooked. It wasn’t just the landscapes or the challenges that drew us in; it was the core values of the trail that we recognized as our own. From that night, we knew we had to embark on this adventure one day. Now it is finally happening — as we will be a part of the Pacific Crest Trail Class of 2026.

The moment also became the turning point that quietly, almost without us realizing it, sparked what would lead up to us risking everything and going all in on our dream of living abroad and exploring the world. All the while telling stories through our vulnerable, creative, and personal project of Chasing Endless Horizons. On December 31, 2025, to be exact, we’ll pull up our Danish roots and begin an adventure without an end date.

Leaving everything behind and starting our new way of life reaches beyond hiking the PCT — it’s about choosing curiosity over security. We’re stepping away from routine and into a simpler, more intentional life, defined by presence, connection, and the courage to face the unknown.

But we can already feel how the PCT is helping us to strip life down to what truly matters. We want to see what happens when comfort disappears and all that’s left is what we carry, who we are, and how we move together.

No BIG why – simply the perfect combination

Undertaking a thru-hike attempt like the PCT comes with many motivations and possible outcomes. As the case often is, it is an entirely individual experience. People can have clear subjective reasons to give it a try — or no particular reasons at all. We’re probably somewhere in between.

Hiking isn’t just one thing. Hiking is a lot of things

We’re drawn by the nature — the vast deserts, rugged mountains, deep forests, and sweeping rivers the PCT traverses. We’re excited by the personal challenge, the hair-raising moments, the blisters, the discomfort, and the days when we’ll learn more about ourselves than we ever expected or thought possible. And most of all, we’re energized by the people, the fellow hikers who might become lifelong friendships, the spontaneous conversations, laughs, the trail angels and kindness of strangers who give while expecting nothing in return.

Detaching from everyday life in the great outdoors

It’s no surprise that the beauty along the trail is utterly captivating. From harsh deserts to lush forests and untamed wilderness, towering mountains to glistening rivers — getting to experience all of that feels like a dream come to life.

Through our many hiking adventures both solo and together, we’ve both discovered that we feel our most authentic selves when in the outdoors. Out there, we feel at home. It might sound strange to some, but immersing ourselves in nature and its peacefulness creates a feeling of belonging to something greater than ourselves. There’s something humbling and powerful about feeling small in the vastness of the world. A reminder that life isn’t just about us or you, but about everything we’re a part of.

It’s often on the trail that we gain the most clarity, creativity, and meaningful insights; probably no coincidence at all. Being able to spend nearly half a year embracing a life of simplicity on the trail, we believe will provide a unique opportunity to slow down, reflect, and connect — both with ourselves and our surroundings.

Growing & finding meaning through the challenge

Thru-hiking 4,650 km (2,650 miles) will for sure be challenging. It would be naive to think otherwise. Rough terrain, unpredictable weather, snow, burned sections, wildfires, and relentless mosquitoes are all part of the journey. There will also be exhaustion, pain, hunger, tears, and extremely tough days to push through — but that’s exactly the point.

We hope this trail will push us far beyond our comfort zone and test us in ways we’ve never experienced. Like many hikers, we’re drawn to the challenge — to discover our limits, and to find fulfillment in overcoming them. If so, the reward we’re hoping for isn’t an external one; it’s the quiet sense of accomplishment that comes from realizing what we’re truly capable of, both individually and together.

For many, hiking the PCT will inevitably be a path to some sort of self-discovery. A space to learn more about personal strengths and values. To engage in continuous growth and development. Maybe we’ll notice small changes along the way or realize what’s different when reminiscing back. Without seeking it, hiking often brings perspectives and direction in life — helping us understand what truly matters and guiding us toward a more meaningful life.

The people & spirit of the PCT

Maybe our biggest motivation for taking on this huge — and at times overwhelming project: the people. We have spent countless hours watching other’s PCT documentaries and videos. As many of you for sure have as well. While doing so, we often find ourselves saying: “We hope we meet people like them when it’s our turn.”

We can’t help but feel excited when talking about the awesome and like-minded people we’ll meet. Fellow hikers we’ll experience this journey alongside. The stories we will share, insider jokes, cold lake swims, moments of swearing at the desert or laughing at how bad we all smell. We also imagine sitting together quietly watching the sun set, being in awe over breathtaking views, or ecstatically celebrating a big greasy burger in town. The thought of earning our first trail names and hopefully forming lifelong friendships with our trail family feels really nice too.

Just as much, we are looking forward to meeting some amazing Trail Angels — some of the heroes of the PCT. Ordinary people, of all ages and genders, who go out of their way to help strangers. They help hikers with everything from snacks, pop-up BBQs, cold drinks, water, to rides or even a place to stay. And so much more. An important detail is that they usually expect next to nothing in return. Each and everyone of them are manifesting core values of kindness, generosity, and love — with just one condition: that you’ll forward the same to those around you.

Our “why” summed up

It’s one of the most beautiful things about this trail’s community in general. We see it as a community where everybody has each other’s backs, treating people and nature with kindness, humility and respect. A place where material and egotistical tendencies are left behind at the starting point, and everybody gives in to a simpler, more joyful way of life. Or at least, those are the people we’ll choose to surround ourselves with.

The answer therefore is, that a lot of aspects, and mainly the experiences along the way both before, during and after, are all part of the reason why the PCT became the starting point of us going all in to chase our dream life.

Well, we guess all there is left to say is that we hope to see you at the Southern Terminus, somewhere on or around the trail, or elsewhere in the big wide world!

“Happy hiking y’all!”

Costa Rica Expectations vs Reality After 2 Months Living Here

For a long time, Costa Rica had been high on our bucket list. Actually it was high on our consideration list back in winter 2024, but ended up going to Texas, US (Psst Check out our video from that roadtrip). The idea of jungles, incredible wildlife, beautiful beaches, and a laid-back lifestyle felt like exactly what we have always been looking for. Now was the time for that experience!
