Quick Guide: Liechtenstein

Driving yourself in either Austria or Switzerland, and thereby being close to Liechtenstein, you might as well give this country a visit too.

What we think you NEED to know

  • Liechtenstein is a really small country measuring only 26 km/16 miles in length and about 9,5 km/5,8 miles in width. So, you can pretty easily and quickly discover this country.

  • It is a very expensive country, charging high prices for food, drinks, accommodation, gas and so forth. The prices are almost completely similar to those of Switzerland.

  • Be aware that you have to buy at least a 1 day toll pass to Austria if you end up driving at an Austrian road (even if it is only for a short period of time on your way back to Switzerland).

  • The country is more or less located in a valley with mountain ranges in Switzerland on one side and Austria on the other surrounding it. Astounding scenery all around!

Our key moments

  • We spend multiple afternoons at the Grossabünt Recreational Park having a free swim in the natural lake and relaxing for a few hours after some long, hard, and sweaty hikes nearby (the hikes were in Switzerland and Austria).

  • Having dinner completely alone, at this beautiful viewpoint over the valley. Just enjoying the peacefulness and landscape all around us.

Summer (hiking): June-August

Winter (skiing): November-March

Currency: Swiss Franc CHF
1 CHF = 1,07 EUR/1,26 USD

Population: 40.000 people living on 160 km²

Location: is a German-speaking, principality between Austria and Switzerland in Europe

Weather: continental climate, hot summers and cold winters

Self-treat after hiking:

Are you traveling around in the Northern part of Switzerland or Western part of Austria, making a stop in Liechtenstein can make sense.

To Grossabünt Recreational Park in Vaduz there is only a 40-minute drive from the start/end point, if you have hiked the trails at either Schäfler or Saxer Lücke in Switzerland. Or about 1 hour from Lünersee in Austria.

Totally worth the drive, if you feel like treating yourself and your body a bit!

This will be NICE to know

  • There are many viewpoints in Liechtenstein that offers easy access opportunities to view the extremely stunning scenery in every direction.

  • Quite frankly there isn’t that much to do. So spending a day there exploring different things should do it.

  • How this country become so wealthy? Well, Liechtenstein used its low corporate tax rates to draw a lot of companies and thus became one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

Our favorite locations

  • Grossabünt Recreational Park in Vaduz, is free, natural bathing lake. The views are mesmerizing, water clean, facilities great, and place relaxing.

  • Gänglesee Lake in Steg is beautiful and the drive up there is too. On your way you’ll find the viewpoint we’ve mentioned and see some small, cozy villages with wooden houses.

This Quick Guide is just a glimpse of Liechtenstein. There is more to explore than we did – like for example go see Vaduz Castle or hike the Fürstensteig. Or wait for ski season in the Winther?
