Day 28: Diving at Caño Island

DAY 28 / Costa Rica

The sole purpose of going to Drake Bay for us was to go scuba diving at Caño Island to see sharks, turtles, rays and especially a huge wish to see a manta ray!

We had booked with Drake Divers. We were ready at the beach, super excited and super nervous as it had been about 2,5 years since we last went diving. Last couple of days we did a bit of brush up on each other to try and remember some of the things we had been thought when we took the license.

On our way to Caño Island on the speedboat together with 15 people going snorkeling, we  were lucky to spot a bunch of dolphins up close. Getting ready to do our first dive, we were excited and ready! We jumped in after a quick briefing as quickly started our descent. Not long after, we spotted our very first Hammerhead Shark! What an unbelievable sight. It was there for a few seconds and then it was gone.

Unfortunately Dittes mask didn’t fit her too well, so she had to go up and exchange the mask. After the first dive, where we among other things saw many sharks and a lot of fish. In between the dives we went to the beach at Caño Island for 25 minutes and while it was a nice and beautiful beach, we were both more eager to go out again and do out second dive.

Second dive was absolutely fantastic! We had a huge turtle swim right between Ditte and I. What a fascinating thing to experience! We saw a couple of turtles, many white-tipped sharks, long tail sting rays and so many different fish. Incredible experience! Only disappointment was the coral reef, which we had both thought to be much more alive than it was.

Overall, it was and incredible day and we couldn’t wait for the next day, where we had another 2 dives, this time we were going to the best place to hopefully see a Manta Ray! Oh, and we actually also spotted some humpback whale tails on our way back to land.

Day 38-77: Treevana… Wow, just wow

Was our thoughts when we finally arrived at Treevana in Cocles. We met the owners, Lori and Ricky, at a restaurant on the one real road there is here — their treat. Super nice people, and we got an amazing first impression of them (and hopefully the same the other way...
