Day 7: Living in the rainforest

DAY 7 / Costa Rica

For the first time while here, rain were pouring down early in the morning and didn’t stop (every day had had occasional shorter showers). We had of course hoped for sunny weather and blue sky. Even so we took our now usual morning walk down to the water at 6:30 AM. Saw no less than 12 scarlet macaws in two trees next to each other. Pretty cool. The sloth had moved on, and we had no luck finding it again. So that was a bit sad. And then it started pouring heavy rain again. After seeking shelter for half an hour, we walked back. For the first time we both felt a tiny bit disappointed. But okay, both weather and wildlife wise we’ve been spoiled so far.

Around 9.15 AM the owners of Bolita picked us up. Phew it was hectic. In and out of the car so many times because they had stops to make. But the vibe was funny and chill, so we just went with the flow. Happy to finally meet them and arrive in our new home in the rainforest just next to Corcovado National Park.

Just as we arrived at “the office”, before starting our hike further and more upwards into the jungle. Guess what? It started to rain heavy again. First thought about that was not positive, but it quickly became comical, as we soon realized a large river crossing and few smaller ones was inevitable. Spoiler: our shoes didn’t dry up until 6 days later. Rainforest humidity didn’t help either.

Finally arriving with our backpacks, soaked shoes, and all to sweaty – we just tried to take this completely new, very primitive environment in. One that included no walls, internet or electricity. Here wildlife rules all around you and the daily rhythm flows with the one of the sun. Or the howler monkeys, we’ve been told.

Kinda surreal to be honest. Amazing to get to experience, but it was clear that this definitely would also take some adjustment for us.

Day 38-77: Treevana… Wow, just wow

Was our thoughts when we finally arrived at Treevana in Cocles. We met the owners, Lori and Ricky, at a restaurant on the one real road there is here — their treat. Super nice people, and we got an amazing first impression of them (and hopefully the same the other way...
